When is Wisdom Tooth Extraction Really Necessary?

Inlays

If your wisdom teeth are able to erupt without causing future oral health issues, extraction may not be necessary. However, in many cases, there isn't adequate space in the mouth for these additional teeth, leading to them becoming trapped under the gums. This can result in growth at an angle that may damage nearby teeth roots and even adjacent bone tissue. As a result, impacted wisdom teeth are typically recommended for extraction.

Inlays

Onlays

Onlays are similar to inlays in that they fill a missing hole caused by a cavity, but onlays extend onto the chewing surface of a tooth to replace one or more cusps. Traditionally, they were also only made of gold, but tooth-colored onlays have made an appearance in dentistry. An onlay is considered a more effective option for patients with large cavities or the decayed area expands over the top of the tooth.

The process of inlays and onlays both involve bonding material to attach and seal it to the tooth. In both treatments, the bonding material may actually improve the strength of the tooth.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction After-care

Following the surgery, it's advisable to dedicate the remainder of the day to rest. Take any prescribed pain medications as needed, typically once the numbness subsides and discomfort sets in. Applying an ice pack to the side of your face where the surgery occurred can help alleviate swelling. For the next few days, opt for soft foods like mashed potatoes, gradually transitioning to more solid foods as your recovery progresses.

Dr. Pham is awesome. I get terrible anxiety after getting the numbing shots before getting a filling fixed or a new one. In past experiences with other dentists I’ve even nearly passed out, gotten super dizzy, thrown up, sweating, etc….

Dr Pham was the first dentist to offer me laughing gas, so I tried it, and it worked. I felt calm, I didn’t have a panic attack, my vitals all normalized.

I can’t believe none of the other dentists offered me this even after my complaints. I appreciate Dr. Pham considering my issues instead of just forcing me through a procedure.
